Motivatie:
Het kan zo mooi zijn. Lekker achterover leunend in het zonnetje; met uitzicht op onze prachtige museumhaven. Met door vrijwilligers met veel vlijt en liefde opgeknapte oude schepen. Zierikzee zou een toeristische hotspot rijker zijn. Maar helaas, een aantal lieden wil liever de huidige kale, steile, stenen muur behouden. Wat een gemiste kans!
Politiek bevriest drijvende trappen
Donderdag 27 februari is een kleine meerderheid in de gemeenteraad van Zierikzee akkoord gegaan met de herinrichting van het Havenpark en Havenplein in Zierikzee. Dit betekent dat de bestrating wordt aangepast, er een bescheiden geulenpad in het Havenpark komt en de kikkerfontein wordt vervangen door een replica. De kwestie van de drijvende (d.w.z. met het tij meebewegende)1 oftewel Spaanse trappen in de Oude Haven wordt tijdelijk bevroren en mogelijk pas weer ontdooid, indien de Oude Haven op de agenda staat. Met dit raadsbesluit komt er vooralsnog een eind aan een felle politieke strijd, waarbij partijen elkaar over en weer verwijten maakten. Partijen als CDA, LSD, Alert, Groen Links, D66 en ONS zagen het Havenpark liever geheel onaangetast.2 Maar ook een partij als de ChristenUnie, die weliswaar vóór een gedeeltelijke herinrichting pleitte, is – getuige haar website – bepaald geen voorstander van wiebelende treden: “De Spaanse trappen willen we er […] uit. Dit is niet het juiste moment om 250.000 euro uit te geven aan iets wat geen nut heeft, niet nodig is en zeker ook niet breed gedragen wordt”.3 Kortom: deze moeilijk te nemen trappen zorg(d)en voor veel commotie.

Die commotie staat geenszins op zichzelf, maar maakt deel uit van een veel bredere discussie rondom de herinrichting van de binnenstad – een discussie die feitelijk al jaren voortsleept. In een eerdere Epinie is daaraan reeds uitvoerig aandacht besteed. Na een boel gesteggel over het al dan niet parkeren op het Havenplein verplaatste de aandacht van zowel burgers als politici zich naar het Havenpark. Ter discussie stond met name het behoud van het historisch karakter daarvan. Dit zou volgens sommigen door een moderne herinrichting worden aangetast. Daarom werd door zeven ereburgers een petitie opgesteld teneinde dit in hun ogen snode plan te verijdelen. Met het besluit tot herinrichting lijkt deze door maar liefst elfduizend burgers ondertekende petitie te worden genegeerd.4 Initiatiefnemer Jacques Geschiere reageert verbolgen: “Ongeloof, teleurstelling, boosheid en frustratie zijn de vele reacties die mij bereiken”.5 Geschiere vindt dat dat de raadsleden niet naar “de burgers” – waarmee hij overigens lang niet alle burgers kan bedoelen (zie onder) – hebben geluisterd. Volgens Geschiere wordt de petitie genegeerd, niet serieus genomen, waarmee “de politiek” geen respect voor “de burgers” toont. Alleen ONS, Alert!, GroenLinks en het CDA hebben tegen het aangenomen voorstel gestemd. En dus gaat het oorspronkelijke plan, in de ogen van Geschiere niet meer dan “een historische vergissing”, gewoon door.6

Wel of geen Spaanse trappen?
Als het aan Geschiere ligt, komen er op termijn geen Spaanse trappen. Zoals gezegd, is de beslissing dáárover tijdelijk bevroren, zodat de strijd op dat punt wellicht nog valt te winnen. Aldus kan er toch nog iets van Geschieres motto – ‘Stop de verstening’, ‘Stop de ontgroening’ en ‘Stop de verspilling’ – terechtkomen.7 Niettemin zijn er ondanks felle tegenstanders ook voorstanders van de herinrichting.8 Heleen de Vries uit Zierikzee bijvoorbeeld maakte in dit opzicht met anderen een facebookpagina aan. De Vries had moeite met het eenzijdige verzet tegen de herinrichting en begon een tegenactie. Binnen enkele uren werd ze door 180 mensen gesteund.9 Deze voorstanders vinden op hun beurt steun bij het in dit verband verantwoordelijke Bureau B+B stedenbouw en landschapsarchitectuur. De – overigens historische gemotiveerde – visie van dit bureau op de Spaanse trappen luidt als volgt: “Het hart van de stad wordt verbonden met de museumhaven waardoor Zierikzees nautisch verleden zichtbaar wordt gemaakt. De museumhaven wordt beter toegankelijk door op de kop van de haven een steigertrap te maken. Bij eb gaat de drijvende trap tot de rand van het water, en sta je in de havenkom. Bij vloed stijgen de drijvende brede traptreden mee met het water waardoor de trap een steiger wordt. Er ontstaat een unieke dynamische plek die nooit hetzelfde is en waar de binnenstad de zee ontmoet. Rondom de Oude Haven wordt een nieuwe bomenrij aangebracht. Grote nieuwe lindes versterken de vorm van de havenkom. De bomen komen verder van de gevels en in een royaal profiel”.10 In deze visie is dus ook de ontgroening, waarover Geschiere spreekt, niet echt terug te vinden.

I have always dreamed of being a novelist but never dreamed I’d make a career of it. In college, though, I helped a fellow student who needed help. She could not stop complimenting me . Word got around and someone asked me for writing help just a week later. This time they would compensate me for my work.
During the summer, I started doing research papers for students at the local college. It helped me have fun that summer and even funded some of my college tuition. Today, I still offer my writing services to students.
